Get to know the allergies that affect many Filipinos.

Allergies can affect different parts of the body. The common types include food, skin, respiratory, drug, and insect allergies.

In the Philippines, the most common allergies include food allergies, skin allergies, respiratory allergies like allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, and reactions to insect bites or stings. Common triggers can include dust, pollen, food, and insect bites.

1. Food Allergies

Food allergies happen when the immune system reacts to a certain food, mistakenly treating it as harmful. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, including:

  • Itching
  • Hives
  • Swelling
  • Stomach pain
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty in breathing

In severe cases, food allergies can cause anaphylaxis, a serious allergic reaction that requires immediate medical attention.

2. Skin Allergies

Skin allergies can happen when the skin reacts to an allergen or irritant. Triggers can be certain foods, medicines, soaps, cosmetics, fragrances, plants, and insect bites. Skin conditions linked to these reactions include eczema, hives, and contact dermatitis. Symptoms may include:

  • Itching
  • Rashes
  • Redness
  • Hives
  • Swelling
  • Dry or irritated skin

3. Respiratory Allergies

Respiratory allergies affect the airways and can make it harder to breathe comfortably. Two common types are allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma. Triggers can include dust, pollen, mold, pet dander, and other airborne allergens.

Allergic rhinitis mainly affects the nose and may cause:

  • Sneezing
  • Itchy or runny nose
  • Nasal congestion

Allergic asthma affects the lungs and airways and may cause:

  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness
  • Difficulty in breathing

4. Drug Allergies

Drug allergies occur when the immune system reacts to a medication. Reactions can be mild or more serious and may require immediate medical attention. Symptoms may include:

  • Skin rashes or hives
  • Itching
  • Swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
  • Wheezing or difficulty in breathing
  • Dizziness or feeling faint
  • Nausea or vomiting

Knowing the signs and which medications trigger your allergies can help you avoid harmful reactions.

5. Insect Allergies

Insect bites and stings can cause allergic reactions in some people, ranging from mild redness and itching to more serious symptoms. Symptoms may include:

  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Pain or tenderness
  • Hives
  • Swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
  • Dizziness or feeling faint
  • Difficulty in breathing

Being aware of possible reactions can help you take the right steps when needed.
